Cowboy Brew 6/22: A Giving Heart

Pickens Steps Up Yet Again For Cowboys

Good morning. Today, we’re remembering the life and legacy of Paul Mullen who passed away at the age of 75.

Paul was the starting center on Coach Henry Iba's final Oklahoma State men's basketball team, and remained an avid supporter of OSU Athletics throughout his life—regularly attending games and team reunions.

🎧 OSU MAX PODCASTS

We’ve heard Deion and Clint talk about their golf games in the past.

This week, we actually talk about some real talent on the course when the duo recaps a big weekend on the links for former Cowboys Golfers as Wyndham Clark won his first major and four others including Rickie Fowler finished in the top 43.

Special guest OSU Cowboy Golf Sports Information Director Ryan Cameron drops by the show to talk with the guys about the recent run of wins for the former Pokes.

🔼 A Lasting Impact. At a young age, we’re taught that one of the most rewarding things in life is to give back as it could impact others for years to come.

Boone Pickens did that and more, and not just at OSU. That giving continued this week as the University announced that it recently received a $120 million gift from the T. Boone Pickens Foundation.

Pickens was a legendary energy executive, proud Poke, and transformative philanthropist whose giving to Oklahoma State now approaches $650 million.

🔼 No Problem For This Newbie. New things can be difficult—but that wasn’t the case for Oklahoma State softball’s Rachel Becker. The success she had started at Purdue continued when she transferred to Stillwater for this season.

This spring, she led the team in average (.443) and walks (47) and set a program record by reaching base in 49 consecutive games at one point this spring. Her 22 doubles were tied for the most in the country and her defense wasn’t far behind with a .977 fielding percentage up the middle for the Cowgirls.

For her success, she earned All-America, All-Region and All-Big 12 accolades.

🔼 Nope, We’re Still Not Over It. We know, we know. We’ve talked about it all week, but seriously, we can’t stop.

This past weekend’s U.S. Open was truly one to remember, not just for former Cowboy Wyndham Clark, but for the entire OSU golf program, who finished with four alums in the top-20!

Clark’s story stole the headlines and rightfully so. The emotion and heart displayed down the stretch is exactly what makes OSU golf so special.

We promise, you don’t want to miss reading it. It’s truly a special, special piece.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 72 DAYS

It’s tough to talk about the history of Oklahoma State football without bringing up, #72 John Ward.

Ward was a two-sport All-American (yes, you read that right) during his time in Stillwater, excelling in both football and wrestling.

A native of Enid, Okla., Ward was a starting tackle for the Cowboys from 1967-69, earning All-American status in 1969.

On the mat, he also earned All-American status that same year, finishing third at the NCAA Championships. In his two seasons as a starter on the mat, he compiled a 35-5 ledger.

After his time at OSU, Ward was drafted in the first round of the 1970 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He would go on to play in 78 games with three different teams (Vikings, Bears and Buccaneers). He was a part of two Super Bowl appearances with the Vikings (1973, 1974).

🤔 COWBOY TRIVIA

As we mentioned above John Ward played in two Super Bowls with the Vikings during his NFL career.

OSU has a long, storied tradition of former players in the Super Bowl.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Walt Garrison.

The OSU great picked up a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl VI with the Dallas Cowboys in a 24-3 defeat of the Miami Dolphins in 1971.

Garrison carried the ball 17 times for 74 yards in the game, and also added two catches for 11 yards to help Dallas secure their first Super Bowl title.

The very next season, Garrison earned Pro Bowl accolades with 1,174 of all-purpose yards and 10 total TDs.

One more day until Friday! Let’s have a great one!
