Cowboy Brew 6/7: Austin Invaders

Today, we find out what happens when a Cowboy invades Austin.

Happy Hump Day everyone. That day, for no particular reason, he decided to go for a little run. So he ran to the end of the road. And when he got there, he thought maybe he’d run to the end of town. And when he got there, he thought maybe he’d just run across… Austin, Texas.

Fouad Messaoudi has us yelling, “Run, Cowboys, Run” as Oklahoma State track & field kicks off their NCAA Outdoor Championship campaign today in the Lone Star State.

And because fall can’t get here soon enough, we’ll be counting down to kickoff at Boone Pickens Stadium every day until September 2.

What else are we stirring into today’s Brew?

🔼 Run, Fouad, Run. Even though the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships don’t start until tonight, one Oklahoma State distance runner got an early start on gaining some honors while in Austin—Fouad Messaoudi was named to his third consecutive Bowerman Watch List.

The Morocco native is the fourth Cowboy to be named to the Bowerman Watch List for track & field's version of the Heisman Trophy since the award's inception in 2009, joining German Fernandez (Finalist, 2010), Nick Miller (Semifinalist, 2016), and Chad Noelle (Watch List, 2016).

🔼 I-Say-Hi To The Newest Cowboy. We can promise you one thing, you won’t want to miss any Oklahoma State men’s basketball next year! An already loaded incoming class put the cherry on top this week with the signing of former top-40 national prospect, Isaiah Miranda.

With the announcement, the Cowboys incoming class now ranks as the ninth-best in the entire country! (That’s pretty good for those keeping score at home.)

The 7’1” power forward comes to Stillwater with four years of eligibility remaining after reclassifying in order to enroll at NC State in December of 2022, but after redshirting the remainder of last season he comes to the Cowboys ready to make an impact.

🔼 Go Time. The 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships get underway tonight in Austin, and Oklahoma State will be highly represented with 11 standouts representing the Orange & Black.

And we’ve got five Cowboys in action on the first night:

6:46pm: 1500m Semifinals
Chris Middleton-Pearson, Alex State, Fouad Messaoudi

8:14pm: 800m Semifinals
Mehdi Yanduri

9:08pm: 10,000 Finals
Alex Maier, Isai Rodriguez

🔼 Blackmon On The Ballot. Oklahoma State great Justin Blackmon received great news this week when he was named to the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot.

It’s the second straight season he’s been on the ballot and he is among the youngest candidates up for the honor this year. He remains one of only two WRs in college football history to twice win the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the best college football wide receiver.

The Cowboys have seven representatives in the College Football Hall of Fame, the latest coming in 2022 with the induction of former OSU star Terry Miller.

🔼 Not Going Anywhere. The precedent has been set and the bar has been raised. This year’s trip to the NCCA Women’s College World Series was a record-setting one as it was the fourth-straight trip for the Cowgirls—a program record.

And with folks like Taylor Tuck laying the foundation, the Cowgirls don’t plan on going anyway anytime soon.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF

87 days. That’s right folks, start getting those tailgating menus together! We are just 87 days from Oklahoma State football being back!

Speaking of 87, did you know this 87-yard touchdown pass from Daxx Garman to Brandon Sheperd against Missouri State is the fourth-longest pass play in program history?

He finished the game with four catches and 131 yards in the 40-23 win back in 2014 against the Bears.

🤔 COWBOY TRIVIA

Call To The Hall. Justin Blackmon is on the ballot to possibly become the eighth Cowboy inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

As mentioned above, the latest was Terry Miller in 2022. But do you know who the first Oklahoma State player to be inducted was?

Think you got it? Scroll on down to the bottom of this email for the answer!

Inducted in 1966, Pappy Waldorf became the first member of the Oklahoma State football family enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. In his five seasons in Stillwater, He piled up a 34-10-7 ledger, a winning percentage of .735 that still remains the highest in program history.
