🔼 Pokes In Pursuit. The oldest golf tournament in the world usually brings the biggest challenges.

Five former Pokes are taking on those challenges this weekend at the 151st edition of the Open Championship, this year, being played at the Royal Liverpool course.

After the first round, all five OSU alums were within seven shots of the lead, including three sitting in the top-20 at the event.

Highlighting the former Cowboys were Alex Noren and Wyndham Clark, who both sit at 3-under, just two shots off the lead and tied for seventh on the leaderboard after the first 18.

This weekend, the quintet of former Cowboys will look to be the first OSU alum to win the historic Open Championship. The Open and the Masters are the only two majors that former Cowboys haven’t won yet.

Friday’s tee times for the Orange and Black faithful: Noren (1:52 AM), Viktor Hovland (3:47 AM, Talor Gooch (8:15 AM), Clark (8:59 AM) and Rickie Fowler (9:10 AM).

🔼 No Place Like Home. If this week isn’t evident enough how special Stillwater is, we’re not sure what will be.

Not 1, not 2, but 3 former All-Americans are now back with their alma mater, assisting the programs that they helped build on the field.

Former OSU standouts Carrie Eberle (softball), Vanessa Shippy-Fletcher (softball) and Stratton Nolen (men’s golf) were announced this week as assistant coaches returning to their former programs.

In three years as a volunteer assistant, Shippy-Fletcher helped the Cowgirls to three straight appearances in the NCAA Women's College World Series and helped OSU outfielders to six All-Big 12 and six NFCA All-Region honors.

A star in her playing days, Shippy-Fletcher is one of only two three-time All-Americans in Oklahoma State history. She is OSU's only three-time Academic All-American. The Big 12 Player of the Year in 2016 and 2018, Shippy-Fletcher finished her career with an impressive .404/.532/.585 slash line and her name remains atop the OSU career records list for runs, doubles, bases on balls and on-base percentage.

In her two seasons in Stillwater, Eberle went 36-5 with a 1.13 earned run average, posted 224 strikeouts in 266.1 innings of work and held the opposition to a .184 batting average. The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic, but in her lone full season with OSU, she was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and helped lead the Cowgirls to the 2021 Women's College World Series.

After that, she joined the professional ranks with Athletes Unlimited, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 2021.

Nolen is a former All-American for the Cowboys and helped OSU take home the program’s 11th national title in 2018.

His sophomore year (2015-16) was a breakout season for the Austin, Tex. native, winning the Big 12 Championship to earn all-conference status and All-American honors.

After competing professionally for three years upon graduation, Nolen has worked since 2021 as a data and financial analyst in the medical field.

🔼 Setting the Lineup. Opponents? Check. Locations? Check. Next up? Dates.

The OSU women’s basketball team reveled the Big 12 portion of its schedule with the announcement of the Big 12’s scheduling matrix for the 2023-24 season.

Teams will play five conference opponents in a home-and-away series while playing the other eight teams once to comprise an 18-game schedule.

For the Cowgirls, they will face Baylor, UCF, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech twice.

The quartet of home-only games will consist of contests with league newcomers BYU and Houston as well as Texas and West Virginia.

OSU's road-only opponents will be Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State and TCU.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 43 DAYS

Could there be any other way to recognize 43 days to kickoff besides our own #43, Terry Miller?

A two-time All-American for OSU, Miller finished second in the voting for the 1977 Heisman Trophy and fourth in 1976. He is one of only 23 running backs in college football history to have logged two top-four Heisman finishes.

In his collegiate career, Miller played in 43 games, totaling 871 carries for 4,754 rushing yards, 49 rushing touchdowns, 5.5 yards per carry and 110.6 rushing yards per game. He is still the only player in OSU history to finish his career with three 1,000-yard rushing seasons, and he ranked fourth in career rushing in NCAA history following his final season.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: BYU.

Despite being the third-furthest from Stillwater, BYU and OSU have played three times in the past, while Houston is a two-time opponent and Cincy and UCF have faced the Cowgirls on one occasion.

However, the last time the Cougars and Cowgirls met? 1990.

Safe to say things have changed a bit since then.

Let’s finish the week strong Pokes!
