Cowboy Brew 11/13: Run Pokes Run! (Forrest Gump Voice)

Cowboys, Cowgirls Race To NCAA Regional Titles

Good Morning Pokes. We sure are glad that there’s no long distance charges any more.

If so, the Cowboys and Cowgirls would be in trouble after the display they put on this weekend.

Long distance was the name of the game on the course and on the court this weekend for the Orange & Black. You’ll learn why in this edition of the Brew.

What all do we have stirring in today’s Brew! Check it out below!

🎧 OSU MAX: FACE TO FACE

Fouad Messaoudi is one of the most decorated distance runners in Oklahoma State history.

Messaoudi has earned numerous All-American honors and Big 12 Championships. But his biggest wins came indoors in 2023 winning the 3,000 meter NCAA title to go along with the Distance Medley title.

Learn more about Fouad and how he got started running in this episode of the Pokes Pod.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Best In The Midwest. All fall long, the OSU cross country squads have been ranked among the best in the country.

On Friday, both teams earned their shots to race for that title with not one, but ✌️ Regional Championships being won by the Orange and Black.

With their titles, they both earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Charlottesville, Va. next weekend.

The Cowgirls kicked things off with a dominant and controlled performance from top-to-bottom, scoring just 30 points as a team. With their victory, the Cowgirls secured the fifth Midwest Regional Championship in program history (2001, 2005, 2015 and 2022).

On the men's side, the Cowboys put down an even more dominant display, scoring 19 points overall. The OSU men put all five scorers in the top-10, with freshman phenoms Denis Kipngetich and Brian Musau controlling the race from start-to-finish. Kipngetich collected his second career meet victory (2023 Cowboy Jamboree) and first career NCAA Midwest Regional title.

Big 12 Champion Musau earned runner-up honors Friday and has yet to finish outside the top-2 in any race this season. Behind Musau was Fouad Messaoudi in third, giving the Cowboys a 1-2-3 finish overall.

🔼 Opening In Style. What did the Cowboys say to the buffalo on Saturday in Stillwater? “Good Bye-Son” (bada bing!)

Ok, well luckily, the OSU wrestling squad performed better than that altered dad joke because the Cowboys opened their 2023-24 season in style, dominating Bucknell, 38-6.

The Cowboys won nine of ten matches, over half of which earned bonus points from No. 24 Troy Spratley, No. 2 Daton Fix, No. 6 Izzak Olejnik, No. 4 Dustin Plott and No. 11 Luke Surber.

In all, OSU recorded 23 takedowns on the night and allowed just two.

🔼 Dialing Long Distance. Guess it’s a good thing phone companies don’t charge for long distance anymore, because the Cowboys might be in trouble.

OSU tied a single-game school record with 17 3-pointers, including four apiece from Javon Small and Bryce Thompson in a 85-70 victory over the visiting Bearkats of Sam Houston State.

Small, a transfer from ECU who missed the opener, also dished out five assists in the contest.

John-Michael Wright was the third Poke in double-figures with 14.

🔼 Battling the Buffs. Being on the road is never easy.

Being on the road against a top-20 opponent makes it even more challenging.

The Cowgirls gave it all they had and took the 20th-ranked Buffaloes of Colorado to the wire, but fell to a late rally by CU, 86-75.

Junior Anna Gret Asi led OSU in scoring with 25 points on the night, connecting on six three-pointers and dishing out four assists.

Asi’s six three-pointers were part of a new school record effort by the Orange & Black, who knocked down 15 3-pointers in the contest.

🔼 Ain’t No Sunshine. Sometimes, storms come up out of nowhere.

The OSU football squad battled the tough road journey this past weekend, dropping a rain-soaked decision to UCF, 45-3, to halt the recent winning streak.

🎥 OSU MAX: INSIDE THE FILM ROOM

GIA was officially introduced to Javon Small on Sunday in a thrilling 85-70 win over Sam Houston State.

Small showed off all his skills on the floor, but it’s what he brings off the floor to the Orange & Black that has the coaching staff excited. See that and more in the this edition of the Cowboy Film Room.
