Cowboy Brew 7/17: Speedy Scholars

Cowboys, Cowgirls Earn National Recognition

Good Monday Morning Pokes. “I feel the need. The need for SPEED!”

It probably would’ve ruined the iconic Top Gun line if Goose shouted out “and smarts!,” but speed and smarts is a dominating combination, especially when it comes to sports.

Our Cowboys and Cowgirls have demonstrated that in so many facets and were recognized for it nationally recently.

We’ve got details on that, more pro diamond Cowboys, and much more!

What else is stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🎧 OSU MAX PODCASTS

After having a breakout junior season, Idaho native Chase Adkison achieved the dream of a lifetime.

Last week, he signed a free agent deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, completing an incredible baseball journey.

Earlier this spring, we sat down with Chase to talk about his career year, what brought him to Stillwater and the trials he faced in order to play for the Cowboys.

🔼 The Need For Speed (& Smarts). No, we’re not bringing Tom Cruise into this.

We’re talking about he Orange and Black Track & Field/Cross Country programs!

Late last week, both OSU track & field programs were named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic teams.

This marks the 14th straight year for the Cowgirls and the 12th straight year for the Cowboys being named All-Academic teams under Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith. Between the men's and women's programs, Oklahoma State has been named All-Academic teams in 28 of the 29 combined seasons coached by Smith.

Additionally, a combined 34 Cowboys and Cowgirls were named USTFCCCA All-Academic athletes, with 24 on the women's side and 10 on the men's side. Overall, the Cowgirls finished with a team-wide GPA of 3.555, tied for the second-highest mark in program history.

Late last week, two more joined the professional ranks with them as Chase Adkison (Cardinals) and Bayden Root (Brewers) both singed free agent contracts.

Adkison had a breakout year behind the plate for OSU, appearing in 56 games, including 55 of those as starts. He hit a career best .314, with seven HRs, nine doubles and 44 RBIs.

Root was a machine out of the pen for the Cowboys, appearing in 41 games in two seasons in Stillwater. He had a 10-2 record with one save in 63.1 innings of work, while allowing 57 hits, striking out 70 and walking just 29.

🔼 Oliver’s Octagon. Everywhere he’s gone, Jordan Oliver has won.

During his four years at OSU, he took home four Big 12 individual championships, two national championships and one national runner-up finish. He was 127-6 overall, including a 68-3 mark in dual matches.

Upon graduation, he went on to have a long standing career on the mat, including taking home the 2019 US National Championship at 65 kg.

This past spring, he moved his focus to another challenge, signing with Bellator MMA. This week, it was announced that he will make his MMA debut on August 11 against Andrew Triolo at Bellator 298.

🔼 Need Something to Binge? Caught up on all your Netflix shows? Run out of HBOMax content? We got you covered.

After spending hours with local and national media, OSU Max has plenty of interviews from Coach Gundy, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormak and all four OSU players in attendance.

Coach Gundy and the OSU players spent Big 12 Media Days looking ahead towards the upcoming season, learning from last year and building the chemistry and culture in the Cowboy locker room in the ever-changing landscape of college football.

🔼 “Leader is an understatement for that guy.” Anytime you draw a quote like that from your peers, you’re making an impact, no matter the situation.

Former OSU All-American Cade Cunningham may have lost his second NBA season due to injury, but his impact in the Detroit Pistons locker room was felt all season long.

NBA.com had an in-depth look at Cunningham’s effect on the Pistons this past season.

🤠 WE WORKIN’

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 47 DAYS

With 47 days left until kickoff, how can we not honor one of Stillwater’s own?

Good ole #47 Luke McEndoo, who also happens to be the son of OSU tight ends and fullbacks coach, Jason McEndoo.

A local walk-on from Stillwater High, he’s played in three games over the past two seasons, primarily on special teams. He also earned scout team player of the week last year during the Oklahoma prep week.

Locally, he played for Tucker Barnard at Stillwater, reaching the title game in his final two seasons.

🤔 COWBOY TRIVIA

Luke McEndoo isn’t the only Cowboy who’s father is on the coaching staff.

Heck, Luke isn’t even the Cowboy, who’s father is on the coaching staff and who played at Stillwater High.

There are TWO other current Cowboys that played at Stillwater High and who’s father is on the current OSU coaching staff?

Think you might have it? Can you get both?

🎥 OSU MAX

Very few bleed Orange and Black more than Coach Gundy.
